How to Change the Oil on a Honda 120 UT3 Engine: A Beginner’s Guide

Maintaining your Honda 120 UT3 engine is crucial to keeping your quarter midget race car running at peak performance. One of the simplest yet most important maintenance tasks is regularly changing the oil. If you're new to racing—or even just new to oil changes—don’t worry. This guide will walk you through the process step by step.

Why Change the Oil?

Changing the oil ensures:

- Engine Longevity: Clean oil keeps your engine running smoothly for as long as possible.

- Peak Performance: High-performing engines need fresh oil to stay efficient on the track.

As a general rule, change the oil **every race weekend**. It’s quick, simple, and easy once you know how.

What You’ll Need

Before starting, gather these tools and materials:

  • 10mm wrench (metric tools are a must for Honda engines)

  • Funnel

  • Racing oil (ask your engine builder for a recommendation; we use Briggs & Stratton 4T by AMSOIL)

  • Bucket or container for draining oil

  • Paintbrush or small cleaning tool

  • Rag for cleanup

Step-by-Step Process

1. Locate the Oil Drain Plug

- The Honda 120 UT3 engine has two drain plugs, one on each side. Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the plug. Ensure you’re gripping the wrench tightly to avoid rounding off the corners.

2. Prepare for Draining

- Place a bucket underneath the engine to catch the oil. A small wooden board or an engine platform can help you angle the engine properly for better drainage.

3. Drain the Oil

- Carefully unscrew the plug while holding the engine steady. Let all the oil flow out into the bucket. Be patient and make sure the engine is completely drained.

4. Inspect and Clean

- Check inside the drain plug hole for metal shavings or debris. These can occur from regular engine wear or if the chain isn’t aligned properly. Use a paintbrush or rag to clean any residue off the plug and threads. Ensure the threads are smooth to avoid cross-threading when reinstalling the plug.

5. Reinstall the Drain Plug

- Thread the plug back into place by hand, ensuring it feels smooth and natural. Tighten it securely but avoid over-tightening. If you’re unsure, consult your engine builder for torque specifications.

6. Refill the Oil

- Check your engine builder's recommendation for the oil type and quantity. For our Honda 120 UT3, we use 12 ounces of Briggs & Stratton 4T racing oil. Use a funnel to pour the pre-measured oil into the opposite side of the engine.

7. Recycle the Old Oil

- Transfer the used oil from the bucket into a container and take it to your local auto parts store for proper recycling.

Final Checks

- Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the new oil.

- Double-check for leaks and ensure everything is tightened correctly.

- Clean any oil residue from the engine.

Pro Tip: Get the Driver Involved

If you’re working with a young racer, involve them in the process. Learning to care for their equipment not only builds responsibility but also gives them a better understanding of how their race car operates.

With regular oil changes and proper maintenance, your Honda 120 UT3 engine will stay race-ready and reliable for every track day. Taking the time to master these simple steps ensures both your car and your racer are always in top form.

Happy racing! 🏁
